| Belves, a mediaeval village with its seven church steeples, is situated on a rocky highground dominating the Nauze valley, and is on the edge of the Bessede forest .
It is a village in the south east of the department of Dordogne, in the heart of Black Perigord. First inhabited in 250 B.C. by a celtic tribe, the “Bellovaques” who gave their name to the village, Belves was fortified during the 11th Century because of its strategic position. The most ancient part of the village, “the castrum” the fortified part, is the ancient donjon. Some of the points of interest in Belves are the hotel “Bontemps” with its renaissance front, the remparts that once surrounded the village with a fortified gate, and a defensive tower that was highered to become a belfry during the 15th century. The main square “La Place d’Armes” comes alive every Saturday (market day) which takes place beneath the 500 year old covered market. A short distance away, are the entrances to the troglodyte caves, inhabited from the 13th to the 18th century. Other architectural interests, such as the Chateau or old convent (“Frères Précheurs”) can be discovered by stolling through the alleyways which have been poetically named “Little ground”, “the road at the end of the world”, “the bird who sings”…etc. The holiday cottages that we represent are just a short distance away from this mediaeval village, for example the property named “Pigeonnier”, a beautiful residence with a covered and heated pool.
