Rental Beynac |
The origins of Beynac are surprisingly not mediaeval, but much more ancient.
It was during the 10th & 9th Centuries B.C. that Bronze Age man occupied the area, probably to control the Dodogne Valley.
After them, came the Gaulois, who also occupied the area to control commerce and especially the Italian wine trade.
The chateau of Beynac is situated in the commune of Beynac and Cazenac in Black Perigord.
The chateau, built in the 12th. Century, is one of the best preserved and well know in the area.
It is, of austere mediaeval construction, situated on top of the cliff dominating the village on the banks of the Dordogne river. With its square tower it could watch over the river to give early warning of any raiders approaching.
You can admire the Chateau of Beynac from certain of Bon Séjour en France’s holiday cottages, for example La Croix, Le Pêcheur, Les Terrasses or even the manor house “Vignevierge” ideally situated between Beynac and Sarlat.
With the reorganisation of Perigord, Beynac became one of 4 “baronnies” along with Biron, Bourdeilles and Mareuil.
Although Beynac withstood many attacks, the chateau was taken twice, once by Richard the Lion Heart and once by Simon de Montfort.
The village was built around the periphery of the chateau, protected by the fortified ramparts and was commercially very active from the time of the revolution up to the middle of the 19th.century. The port area was an important stop for boats moving down river with various cargoes: timber, farm products, fish, hemp and stone for building.
On the 15 of August 1827, the village of Cazenac 5km away was incorporated with Beynac by prefectorial decision.
Beynac is classed as one of France’s most beautiful villages, as you will discover.
Take the time to visit the chapel, admire the panoramic views of the valley, visit the archaeological park, brows the many shops and take a meal at one of the many delightful restaurants, or even explore the river by taking a leisurely boat trip.
Follow the example of Pissaro, Paul Eluard or Henry Miller and you will find Beynac is not only worth a visit but well worth a stay.
