| The château and its village were founded in the 12th century and by its geographical position, easily accessible by land or river, the inhabitants were vulnerable to attacks during the troubled centuries that were to follow.
The 14th Century, during the plague and the hundred years war, was a period that saw the English and the French, in bitter conflict for this strategic land. The following century was relatively peaceful and Castelnaud, French once again, began to develop demographically and economically. The Caumont familly of Castelnaud, built the Chateau of Milandes as their main residence, more comfortable and less austere than the fortress. During the 16th century, Castelnaud experienced, once again, religious warfare. At the time of the Revolution, during the 18th century, the Chateau was abandoned, privileges abolished and the peasants freed. The 19th and 20th centuries brought many changes. Transportation by river was superseded by the railway, and industry was slowly brought into the countryside. A rural exodus and the two World Wars were the cause the desertification of the village. The economic turning point came in the post-war period with the realisation that tourism could be important and in 1947, Josephine Baker acquired the Chateau de Milandes. She openly welcomed and adopted many children from different origins: “TheRainbow Tribe”.
