| About 10 km south of Sarlat, Domme, built on the cliff tops, high above the river, has an exceptional view of two of the most beautiful villages of the Dordogne, La Roque-ageac and Beynac-et-Cazenac.
This bastide town successfully combines architectural, cultural and gastronomic points of interest. The 13th Century bastide, its fortified gates and towers that once served as prisons, have been extraordinarily well preserved. In 1307, the king of France ordered the capture of the “Knight Templers” and the bastide town of Domme was one of the places of their imprisonment. Even today, it is still possible to see the fascinating and mysterious messages carved on the stone walls by these prisoners. Beneath Domme is a natural cave, 20m deep and 450 m long, that comprises a series of crystallised rooms. A lift, travelling up the cliff face and offering panoramic views, takes you back to the village. The museum of Art and Tradition, with themes of prehistory, local cuisine and old trades and crafts, will allow you to discover the Domme of the past.
